Esta breve carta fue escrita por Isaac Asimov a los usuarios de una nueva biblioteca que se abrió en la ciudad de Troy, Michigan, en 1971.
Esta biblioteca, como muchas otras, está a punto de cerrar sus puertas.
El texto de Asimov es este:
Congratulations on the new library, because it isn’t just a library. It is a space ship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the Universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future, a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you—and most of all, a gateway, to a better and happier and more useful life.
Que podría traducirse (libremente) así:
Felicidades por la nueva biblioteca, ya que no es sólo una biblioteca. Se trata de una nave espacial que te llevará a los confines más lejanos del Universo, una máquina del tiempo que te transportará muy lejos en el pasado y en el futuro, un maestro que sabe más que cualquier otro ser humano, un amigo que te divertirá y te consolará. Y, sobre todo, un pasaje a una vida mejor y más feliz y más útil.
